West Virginia State Requirements

You must hold an active West Virginia Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration before working as a pharmacy technician. Note that you cannot begin working as a technician while your application approval is pending.

West Virginia has two main registration tiers: Pharmacy Technician Trainee and Pharmacy Technician. A separate Nuclear Pharmacy Technician endorsement is available for registered technicians performing specialized nuclear pharmacy work.

There is no minimum age requirement. A trainee must have graduated from High School, earned a GED, or be enrolled in an approved High School pharmacy technician education and training program.

Full Pharmacy Technician applicants must have a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification.

The trainee pathway is available to someone enrolled in an approved pharmacy technician program through a learning institution or training center, or employed in a pharmacy’s approved on-the-job training program.

A trainee application must be submitted and approved before the applicant starts pharmacy technician work. Registered trainees can perform permitted technician duties while completing their approved program under direct pharmacist supervision.

Employer-provided training must include at least 500 hours of employment completed within 12 months. Initial pharmacy-specific instruction must be completed before the trainee regularly performs assigned duties.

The pharmacist-in-charge must report whether the trainee completed the program within 12 months of the trainee application’s approval. A trainee who does not finish on time must stop working unless an extension is approved because of special circumstances.

Full Pharmacy Technician registration requires an active national certification from either PTCB or NHA through the ExCPT examination. After completing an approved training program, a trainee normally has 90 days to pass the PTCE or ExCPT, obtain national certification, and apply for full registration.

Full registration also requires a 20-hour pharmacy-specific training program covering the pharmacy’s prescription receiving, patient-profile, data-entry, stock-selection, medication-preparation, refill, and recordkeeping procedures.

An applicant may use national certification and at least one year of pharmacy technician practice in another jurisdiction to satisfy the main education-and-training pathway. Proof of the applicant’s out-of-state credential or qualifying employment must be provided.

Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Technician Trainee applicants must complete fingerprint-based state and national criminal-history checks before applying. Note that fingerprinting is arranged through IdentoGO using the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy service code, and results remain valid for 12 months.

Registration may be affected by a felony conviction during the preceding 10 years or a misdemeanor or felony that has a rational connection to pharmacy practice. You must also satisfy the state’s substance use and professional-discipline requirements.

Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Technician Trainee applications are completed through the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy’s online application system. Required documents generally include a recent photograph, training records, background-check information and, for full registration, proof of current PTCB or NHA certification.

The initial registration fee is $25. You must separately pay the fingerprinting provider’s background check charges.

Pharmacy Technician registrations expire on June 30 of the technician’s assigned renewal year. West Virginia uses a staggered biennial renewal system, with approximately half of technician registrations renewed each year.

The current renewal fee is $30. This consists of the $20 registration-renewal fee and the applicable $10 Pharmacy Recovery Network assessment.

A registered Pharmacy Technician is authorized to administer immunizations under the direct supervision of a qualified pharmacist after completing approved immunization-administration training, maintaining current CPR certification, and registering as an immunizing pharmacy technician. Vaccination is allowed for patients age 3 and older under the conditions in 15 CSR 12, including written parental consent for minors and compliance with the applicable prescription or CDC-based authority. Note that Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration alone does not provide this authority.
