Ohio State Requirements

You must be registered to the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy before working as a pharmacy technician. Note that submitting an application does not allow you to work while it is being reviewed.

Ohio has three registration levels: Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Registered Pharmacy Technician, and Certified Pharmacy Technician.

This registration is valid for 18-months and allows you to complete the education and practical training required for registered or certified status.

Under the Ohio rules effective May 15, 2026, a trainee applicant must be at least 17 years old. An applicant age 17 or 18 who does not yet have a high school diploma or equivalent must be enrolled in a Board-approved public career-technical school pharmacy technician program.

A trainee generally needs a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent foreign qualification. The approved public-school exception allows certain applicants age 17 or 18 to register while completing high school.

You must be at least 18 years old to become a Registered Pharmacy Technician or Certified Pharmacy Technician.

You must hold a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification. Note: a limited exception applies to technicians who have worked continuously since before April 8, 2009.

Certified Pharmacy Technician applicants must hold a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification. The long-term employee exception available to some registered technicians does not apply to certified applicants.

Registered and Certified Pharmacy Technician applicants must complete education and training that meets Ohio’s standards. Accepted routes include qualifying employer-based programs, accredited pharmacy technician programs, and other programs recognized under the pharmacy technician training rules. A technician may also qualify through an approved reciprocity or experience pathway when the current rule requirements are met.

National certification is not required for Registered Pharmacy Technician status. Certified Pharmacy Technician applicants must hold a current certification recognized by Ohio. Both PTCB and NHA certification satisfy this requirement.

All initial trainee, registered, and certified applicants must complete Ohio and FBI criminal-record checks. Electronic fingerprints must be submitted through an Ohio WebCheck provider using the appropriate Ohio BCI and FBI reason codes.

Ohio does not set one statewide fingerprinting price for pharmacy technician applicants. The amount is charged by the WebCheck provider and can vary by location.

Applications are completed through the Ohio eLicense system. Applicants must choose the correct trainee, registered, or certified application and provide the supporting identification, education, training, criminal-record-check, and certification documents that apply to that registration.

The current application fee is $40 for a Pharmacy Technician Trainee and $65 for either a Registered Pharmacy Technician or Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations expire on March 31 of each even-numbered year. The technician must renew through Ohio eLicense and complete the applicable state continuing-education requirements.

Certified Pharmacy Technician registrations expire on September 30 of each even-numbered year. A current Board-recognized national certification must be maintained and documented during renewal.

The current renewal fee is $65 for both Registered Pharmacy Technicians and Certified Pharmacy Technicians.

A Registered Pharmacy Technician or Certified Pharmacy Technician is authorized to administer eligible vaccines to patients age five or older when working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and under the required physician-authorized protocol. You must complete an approved immunization-administration course, maintain current basic life-support certification, and successfully complete an initial and annual employer-documented competency assessment. Note that Pharmacy Technician Trainees cannot administer vaccines.
