Kentucky State Requirements

You must register with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician. However, Kentucky allows new employees to perform technician duties for up to 30 days after starting employment if the registration application has already been filed and has not been denied. Note that this temporary allowance does not apply to applicants under 16 or applicants with certain previous registration denials, suspensions, or revocations.

Kentucky recognizes two pharmacy technician tiers: Registered Pharmacy Technician and Certified Pharmacy Technician. All technicians hold the same basic state registration, while the certified designation recognizes technicians with qualifying national certification or approved nuclear-pharmacy training.

You must be at least 16 years old to register as a pharmacy technician.

Kentucky does not require a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification for standard pharmacy technician registration. National certification organizations may establish their own education or training eligibility requirements.

Kentucky does not require completion of a particular state-approved training program or a specified number of training hours for standard registration. Technicians may perform only the duties for which they have received appropriate workplace training.

National certification is not required for standard registration. To be recognized by the Board as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, a technician must maintain current PTCB certification, current NHA/ExCPT certification, or complete the University of Tennessee Nuclear Pharmacy Technician Training Program or another Board-approved equivalent.

A Certified Pharmacy Technician may be assigned a broader range of pharmacy functions under general pharmacist supervision. However, technicians cannot provide patient counseling, interpret prescriptions, conduct drug-regimen reviews, receive new verbal prescriptions, perform final product verification, or make decisions requiring professional judgment.

Every Kentucky pharmacy technician must register with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and obtain an NABP e-Profile ID. The ID must be included in your application.

Kentucky does not require every pharmacy technician applicant to submit fingerprints or complete a separate state or federal background check. Applicants must disclose criminal convictions, disciplinary history, and other information requested by the Board, and certain applications may require additional review.

Applications are submitted through the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Licensure Gateway. Applicants create an account, open the Applications section, and select the Pharmacy Technician Initial Application.

The initial pharmacy technician registration fee is $25. Note that pharmacy technicians who volunteer exclusively at a qualifying charitable pharmacy are exempt from the application fee.

Pharmacy technician registrations expire annually on March 31. The Board generally opens the renewal period on February 1.

The annual renewal fee is $25. An expired registration requires a reinstatement application and may carry an additional $25 delinquent fee.

Under Kentucky Administrative Regulations 201 KAR 2:420 and 201 KAR 2:045, a registered pharmacy technician may administer vaccines under the general supervision of a pharmacist. You must complete qualifying ACPE-accredited practical immunization training and maintain current basic CPR certification. National certification is not required solely to qualify for vaccine administration.
