Iowa State Requirements

You must register with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy before working or training as a pharmacy technician. You cannot work while your application is being processed and must wait until your registration is issued. Iowa offers two tiers: Pharmacy Technician Trainee and Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Individuals who do not hold active national certification must register as technician trainees. The registration is valid for one year, during which you need to obtain either PTCB or NHA certification. One additional one-year renewal may be granted only in exceptional circumstances.

To register as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, you must hold active national certification from either PTCB or NHA. National certification must remain active throughout the Iowa registration period.

Age: Iowa does not set a minimum age for pharmacy technician trainee or certified pharmacy technician registration. Employers and national certification organizations may set their own age requirements.

Iowa does not require a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification for state registration. Applicants must nevertheless satisfy the education or training eligibility requirements established by PTCB or NHA before taking the applicable certification examination.

Iowa does not require a specific state training program or number of training hours for initial trainee registration. Each pharmacy must provide and document training appropriate to the technician’s assigned duties.

PTCB or NHA certification is required for Certified Pharmacy Technician registration. Note that you may apply directly for certified registration without first holding trainee registration if you already hold active certification.

Fingerprinting and a formal criminal-background check are not standard requirements for every pharmacy technician application. Applicants must disclose criminal history and disciplinary action, and Iowa Code §155A.40 allows the Board to request criminal-history information or fingerprints when necessary.

Applications are submitted through the Iowa Board of Pharmacy’s Online Profile Portal, operated by the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). Separate online applications are available for Pharmacy Technician Trainee and Certified Pharmacy Technician registration.

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee application fee is $20. The late fee is $40, and reactivation after expiration costs $80.

The Certified Pharmacy Technician registration fee is generally $40 for a two-year period. Initial fees may be prorated based on the remaining period of the applicant’s PTCB or NHA certification, so applicants should use DIAL’s fee calculator to confirm the exact amount.

Certified Pharmacy Technician registration expires on the same date as the technician’s national certification. The standard two-year renewal fee is $40, and the technician must maintain active PTCB or NHA certification.

Trainee registration expires one year after issuance. One renewal may be permitted in exceptional circumstances, and the annual renewal fee is $20.

Iowa Code §155A.33 allows pharmacists to delegate trained technical functions, and 481 IAC 552.9 permits delegation to appropriately trained pharmacy technicians. Under the Iowa Board of Pharmacy’s statewide immunization protocol, a qualified technician may administer a vaccine after the pharmacist assesses the patient and issues the immunization order. The technician must complete an ACPE-accredited immunization program containing study materials, hands-on injection training, competency testing, and instruction in vaccine safety, storage, administration, and adverse-event recognition.

Under Iowa Code §155A.33A, certified pharmacy technicians can perform final product verification within an approved technician product verification program. Note that the pharmacy must meet Board requirements covering technician training, quality assurance, policies, records, and pharmacist patient-care responsibilities.
