Indiana State Requirements

You cannot work as a pharmacy technician in Indiana until the Indiana Board of Pharmacy issues either a Pharmacy Technician-in-Training Permit or a full Pharmacy Technician License. Submitting an application does not authorize you to begin work.

Applicants who have not completed a Board-approved training program or passed an approved national examination may request a technician-in-training permit through the pharmacy technician application. The permit is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. Note that a pharmacist supervisor may request an extension before it expires. If the permit expires without an approved extension, the applicant must submit a new application and fee.

A licensed pharmacy technician must generally be at least 18 years old. An applicant younger than 18 may be considered if the managing pharmacist at the employing pharmacy submits a letter supporting the application.

A high school diploma or GED is required for a full pharmacy technician license. Note that an applicant who has not yet earned one may qualify for a technician-in-training permit while participating in a Board-approved training program and actively working toward a diploma or GED.

To move from a technician-in-training permit to full licensure, you must complete an Indiana Board-approved pharmacy technician training program that includes at least 160 hours of experiential training. After completing the program, upload your Affidavit or Certificate of Completion through the action item linked to your permit in MyLicense One. Alternatively, you may qualify for full licensure by passing the PTCB or ExCPT examination.

Passing the PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam or NHA’s ExCPT exam is an alternative direct route toward full licensure. National certification is not required when the applicant qualifies through a Board-approved training program.

Initial applicants must complete a state and federal criminal-history check using fingerprints. The background check must be completed after the license application has been submitted. The current fingerprinting and background-check cost is $38.20. A new check is not normally required for renewal.

Applications are submitted through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency’s MyLicense One online system. Applicants who need a technician-in-training permit request it within the Pharmacy Technician New Application rather than completing a separate permit application.

The pharmacy technician application fee is $25 and is non-refundable. Note that the same application is used when requesting a technician-in-training permit.

Full pharmacy technician licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years. The biennial renewal fee is $25. Technician-in-training permits are valid for one year and cannot be renewed.

A pharmacy technician license expired for three years or longer requires a $50 reinstatement fee. The applicant must also provide evidence of current PTCB or ExCPT certification, recent out-of-state technician practice, or planned participation in an employer’s approved training program.

Indiana Code § 25-26-13-31.7 allows a pharmacy technician to administer immunizations when delegated by a pharmacist and performed under the required direct supervision. The technician must complete an immunization-training program approved by the Indiana Board of Pharmacy and meet the education and training requirements in 856 IAC 4-2-4. Indiana expanded this authority to cover any immunization beginning July 1, 2025; earlier versions of the law primarily covered influenza and COVID-19 vaccines.
