Alaska State Requirements

You must obtain a pharmacy technician license from the Alaska Board of Pharmacy before beginning employment as a pharmacy technician. Alaska does not have a separate pharmacy technician trainee registration. Note that you cannot begin working as a pharmacy technician while waiting for your license to be issued.

The standard minimum age is 18. However, a person who is at least 16 years old may obtain a pharmacy technician license if they are enrolled in a supervised high school, college, or apprenticeship pharmacy technician training program.

Applicants must generally have a high school diploma or equivalent. However, the education requirement can be satisfied through enrollment in a supervised high school, college, or apprenticeship pharmacy technician training program for applicants qualifying under the under-18 pathway.

Alaska does not require completion of a specified number of hours in a state-approved pharmacy technician training program before initial licensure. Instead, before performing technician duties, the technician must complete the training required by the pharmacist-in-charge, and duties must be consistent with the training received.

Applicants must certify that they have not been convicted of a felony or another crime that affects their ability to perform pharmacy technician duties safely and competently. The application also contains detailed professional-fitness and criminal-history questions.

The current technician application does not require fingerprint submission or a background check.

The current fee regulations establish a $0 initial application fee for pharmacy technicians. A separate $25 pharmacy technician license fee applies for the initial biennial licensing period.

Pharmacy technician applications can be submitted online through the Alaska MY LICENSE system using a MyAlaska account. The Board also provides a paper application.

Pharmacy technician licenses are issued for a two-year period and expire on June 30 of even-numbered years, regardless of the date the license was issued, subject to the Board's rule for licenses issued within 90 days of expiration. The current renewal period is July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028. There is no grace period, and it is illegal to work after the license has lapsed.

The standard biennial renewal fee is $25. For licenses first issued on or after July 1, 2025, the current 2026 renewal form lists a prorated $12.50 renewal fee for the first shortened renewal period.

Nationally certified pharmacy technicians in Alaska may administer immunizations and related emergency medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. This authority was established through HB 145 (2022) and took effect on May 19, 2023. Technicians who administer vaccines must also complete the required immunization training and vaccine-specific CE.
