At a Glance.

Ever wondered what the differences are between PTCB and PTCE?

The two acronyms are often used interchangeably even though they are two very different things. And if you’re just starting out in your career as a pharmacy technician, it’s easy to misunderstand the difference.

In summary:

  • PTCB is an organization
  • PTCE is an exam

PTCB is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board; the non-profit credentialling organization for pharmacy technicians in the United States. Since its founding in 1995, the PTCB organization has granted more than 876,000 pharmacy technician certifications. PTCB is the organization that allows pharmacy technicians to take the PTCE.

The PTCE is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. This is the exam taken to become a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) in the United States. In 2025, almost 50,000 PTCEs were taken throughout the country with a pass rate of 69%. The PTCE exam is one of two exams – along with the NHA – that can be taken to become a CPhT.

Below we detail all key differences between the PTCB and the PTCE:

But aren’t technicians “taking the PTCB exam”?

Technically, no.

It is common for people to say they are “taking the PTCB exam”, even though the official name of the exam is the PTCE.

When people say they are taking the PTCB exam, what they really mean is that they are taking the exam administered by the PTCB. In practice, both terms are widely understood and widely accepted, so the distinction is mostly a minor technicality.

Since nearly everyone in pharmacy understands that “the PTCB exam” refers to the PTCE administered by the PTCB, the terms are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation.

Is the CPhT considered the same as the PTCE?

No, the CPhT is the credential awarded if you pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), as administered by the PTCB organization.

The award of CPhT can also be earned by passing the ExCPT exam, as administered by the NHA.

Is the ExCPT exam also administered by the PTCB?

No, the ExCPT exam is administered by the NHA – the National Healthcareer Association.

The two organizations – PTCB and NHA – are separate. However, passing either the ExCPT or PTCE exam results in the same award, the certified pharmacy technician credential (often abbreviated as CPhT).

Both the PTCB and NHA offer certification exams for pharmacy technicians in the United States, although the PTCE administered by the PTCB is generally regarded as the more widely recognized and preferred credential.

Does the CPhT credential differ between organizations?

The CPhT credential is the same whether it is earned through the PTCB or the NHA.

However, some employers may prefer or specifically require certification from a particular organization, so it is important to review job postings carefully before choosing which certification exam to take.

Do PTCB provide any other certifications?

Yes, the CPhT is one of four certifications provided by PTCB.

After completing the PTCE, earning your credential, and gaining professional experience, you may choose to further advance your career through specialized certifications in sterile compounding, advanced pharmacy technician practice, or pharmacy technician education.

Your journey toward CPhT certification.

PTCB and PTCE play different roles at different points throughout the entire certification process.

As we learned, the PTCE is the exam you take and pass to earn certification, whereas PTCB manages the broader process before and after the exam, including:

  • Eligibility criteria – the minimum requirements to take the PTCE
  • Certification issuance – upon successfully passing the PTCE
  • Renewals – if necessary
  • Continuous education (CE) requirements – every 2 years

Because of this, pharmacy technicians interact with the PTCB throughout their certification journey but only encounter the PTCE at the point of testing. Once the exam is passed, the PTCE itself is no longer part of ongoing requirements (unless a retake is required).

In practice, all exam preparation is focused on the PTCE, whereas all administrative steps – such as applying, receiving certification, and maintaining it – are handled through the PTCB. Employers and state boards do not evaluate exam attempts; instead, they verify active certification status. That certification (CPhT) is issued and maintained by the PTCB.

In summary:

  • the PTCE is what you pass
  • the CPhT is the credential you earn
  • the PTCB is the system that certifies and maintains your credential afterward
