What is the PTCB exam?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, is a nationally recognized certification exam for pharmacy technicians in the United States.

It consists of 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored, 10 unscored). The exam focuses on four key domains:

  • Medications
  • Federal Requirements
  • Patient Safety and Quality Assurance
  • Order Entry and Processing

Note: the PTCB exam outline was updated in January 2026.

Applicants are tested on topics such as pharmacology, pharmacy law, medication safety, and prescriptions. Pharmacy calculations also feature widely throughout the exam.

A passing score of 1,400 leads to the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, which is widely accepted by employers and typically required for state licensure or registration.

PTCB certification is generally regarded as the more widely recognized and preferred credential compared to ExCPT certification, particularly among employers and state boards.

What is the ExCPT exam?

The exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is administered by the National Healthcareer Association.

Like the PTCB, this is nationally accredited certification option. It includes 120 multiple-choice questions (100 scored, 20 unscored) to be answered within a 2-hour and 10-minute timeframe. Applicants must pass with a score of 390 / 500 (a scaled system used by the NHA).

The exam focus is slightly different from the PTCB exam though there are some significant overlaps. Study domains include:

  • Pharmacology
  • Dispensing process
  • Regulations and pharmacy technician duties
  • Patient safety and quality assurance

The ExCPT exam has a stronger emphasis on practical pharmacy skills and daily duties, including medication handling, calculations, and regulatory compliance. Passing the ExCPT also grants the CPhT credential and is accepted in many states, making it a viable alternative to the PTCE.

Eligibility Requirements.

For both the PTCB exam and the ExCPT exam, there are minimum eligibility requirements that must be met.

PTCB eligibility requirements to earn the CPhT credential:

  • Must reside in the United States
  • Must complete a PTCB recognized training program OR equivalent work experience (minimum 500 hours)
  • Must disclose any criminal or licensure actions to PTCB.org
  • Must comply with all PTCB certification policies
  • Must pass the PTCB exam (i.e. achieve a minimum score of 1,400)

Note: applicants can apply for and take the PTCE before completing a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (REP), provided you are within 60 days of finishing the program and meet all other eligibility requirements.

ExCPT eligibility requirements to earn the CPhT credential:

  • Must reside in the United States
  • Must have completed a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have at least one year of pharmacy-related work experience within the past three years (totaling a minimum of 1,200 supervised hours) OR must have completed a pharmacy technician training program within the past five years.

In both cases, the PTCB and ExCPT exams allow applicants to qualify using relevant work experience if they have not completed a formal training program.

How to Schedule Your Certification Exam.

The cost to apply for PTCB certification is $129.00. To schedule your PTCB exam, you must:

  • Create a PTCB account.
  • Log in to your account and submit your certification application.
  • Once approved, you’ll receive an email with authorization to schedule your exam.

Note: the PTCB exam is administered in person at over 1,400 Pearson test centers across the country (including at more than 100 military base locations).

The cost to apply for ExCPT certification is $129.00. To schedule your ExCPT exam, you must:

  • Create or log in to your NHA account.
  • Submit your application and confirm you meet eligibility requirements (e.g. high school diploma, training, or work experience)
  • Pay the exam fee.
  • Schedule your exam at a PSI testing center, an NHA-affiliated school, or via live remote proctoring from home.

Renewal and Continuous Education Requirements.

Whether you earn PTCB or ExCPT certification, there are renewal requirements that pharmacy technicians are required to meet.

In the case of both PTCB and ExCPT certification:

  • Certification must be renewed every 2-years.
  • 20-hours of Continuous Education must be completed.
  • 1-hour of this must be in Patient Safety and;
  • 1-hour of this must be in Pharmacy Law.

And in both cases, a $55.00 renewal fee must be paid.

Which certification exam is the better choice for me?

PTCB certification is widely considered safer and more accepted than ExCPT certification.

Employers more widely regard PTCB certification as the gold standard in pharmacy technician education. Career prospects are therefore higher for pharmacy technicians with this education.

In summary, choose PTCB certification if:

  • You want the most widely accepted certification among employers.
  • You’re aiming to work in hospital or advanced pharmacy settings.
  • You want maximum flexibility across states and employers.
  • You’re planning long-term growth in pharmacy.

Choose ExCPT certification if:

  • You need a slightly more accessible entry point.
  • You’re working in or targeting retail pharmacy.
  • Your employer specifically accepts or prefers ExCPT.

In short, PTCB certification has broader recognition and better long-term value and career prospects for pharmacy technicians. ExCPT is a solid alternative, especially for entry-level or experienced retail technicians.

Which of the two certification exams is more difficult?

Neither exam is more difficult than the other. They are largely the same in terms of standards.

Additionally, it depends on the topics tested and your individual preferences. For instance, the ExCPT exam generally tests more questions on practical retail pharmacy. Therefore, if you are an experienced pharmacy technician, this exam format may be more manageable than the PTCB exam, which features pharmacology and calculations more commonly, for instance.

But as both exams largely test the same core material that pharmacy technicians are required to learn, neither exam should be considered “more difficult” than the other.

Ultimately, this should not be a factor when deciding which certification exam is right for you.
