pharmacy technician vaccine requirements by state

At a Glance.

  • Vaccine requirements vary significantly by state: some states allow pharmacy technicians to administer vaccines, while others restrict this role to pharmacists and other licensed professionals.
  • Approved training is typically required: most states require completion of an ACPE-accredited immunization training program covering vaccine administration, injection technique, and emergency response.
  • CPR/BLS certification is very commonly required: pharmacy technicians administering vaccines typically must maintain current CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Pharmacist supervision is always required: vaccine administration must occur under the direct supervision of an authorised pharmacist.
  • Certification requirements differ: Some states require national certification (such as PTCB or NHA) or a separate vaccine administration credential.
  • CE is typically required: many states require ongoing immunization-related CE to maintain vaccine administration privileges.
  • Age and vaccine restrictions apply: states may limit which vaccines technicians can administer and the minimum patient age.
  • In no US state are “pharmacy technician trainees” authorised to administer vaccines. Only “registered”, “licensed” or “certified” pharmacy technicians are authorised to administer vaccines, the title of which depends on each state’s licensure or registration pathway.
  • Pharmacy technician vaccine laws change frequently, so always verify current requirements with your relevant State Board of Pharmacy.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Can pharmacy technicians administer any vaccine?

No.

States may limit which vaccines technicians can administer, often restricting them to vaccines recommended by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) or specific vaccines such as influenza and COVID-19 vaccines.

Can PTCB-certified pharmacy technicians administer vaccines in every state?

No.

Holding PTCB certification alone does not automatically grant vaccine administration authority. Technicians must also satisfy the specific requirements established by their state’s Board of Pharmacy.

Are pharmacy technician trainees allowed to administer vaccines?

No.

States that permit technician vaccine administration generally restrict this authority to registered, licensed, certified, or otherwise qualified pharmacy technicians. Trainees are not authorised to administer vaccines.

Are pharmacy technicians allowed to administer epinephrine for vaccine reactions?

Some states specifically authorize trained pharmacy technicians to administer emergency medications such as epinephrine during vaccine-related reactions, while others limit this authority to pharmacists or other healthcare providers.

What happens if a pharmacy technician gives vaccines without meeting state requirements?

Administering vaccines without proper authorization, training, or supervision may be considered outside the technician’s scope of practice and could result in disciplinary action by the State Board of Pharmacy.
