full pharmacy technician state requirements

At a Glance.

  • Pharmacy technician requirements vary significantly by state, so there is no single set of national rules for registration, licensing, certification, or continuing education.
  • Some states require state registration, some require state licensure, others require national certification – and many require a combination of these depending on the pharmacy technician’s role.
  • Certification typically refers to national pharmacy technician certification, which is earned by passing either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) administered by the PTCB or the ExCPT exam administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Registration and licensure are both forms of state authorization to work as a pharmacy technician, but they are not always the same. Registration generally places a pharmacy technician on a state registry, whereas licensure typically – though not always – involves more extensive professional requirements – often by completing a national certification exam. Because each state defines these terms differently, it’s important to refer to each state requirement separately.
  • Several states allow you to begin working as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee before meeting all of the requirements for full registration or licensure. These trainee registrations are typically non-renewable and valid for one to two years, during which you must satisfy the state’s eligibility requirements — such as completing a board-approved training program, gaining supervised practical experience, obtaining national certification, or a combination of the three, before advancing to full pharmacy technician registration or licensure.
  • Registration, licensure, and certification are not interchangeable. State registration or licensure is issued by a state’s Board of Pharmacy, whereas national certification is typically awarded by organizations such as the PTCB or NHA.
  • This comprehensive state requirements guide is organized state by state, making it easy to compare training requirements, application fees, renewal periods, and continuing education requirements.
  • Always verify the latest requirements with your State Board of Pharmacy or regulatory authority as regulations, fee schedules and renewal requirements can change. Current licensees should also consult the State Board of Pharmacy (or regulatory equivalent) for the same reason.
  • Consult our state requirements guide on vaccination to determine whether pharmacy technicians are authorized to administer vaccines in your state.
